Cooking On All Four Burners

There’s a phrase that I tend to say from time to time. I say, “Now you’re cooking on all four burners!” Basically it means that you are getting it done. You’re rocking it, things are going well.

I think of this phrase often lately because our stove only has three working burners so I’m never cooking on all four burners literally. It hasn’t been a priority to get it fixed because if I was literally cooking on all four burners, I would inevitably burn at least one item and/or be making way too much food. Anyway, I digress.

The whole new year’s resolution, “Get fit! Lose weight! Eat healthy!” stuff is a juggle. Getting it all going at the same time is like trying to cook on all four burners.

Burner #1 – Exercise

Burner #2 – Eating Well

Burner #3 – Getting plenty of sleep

Burner #4 – Proper Mindset (thinking healthy, making healthy choices throughout the day)

Well, hells bells, that is a LOT of pots to stir, right?

I think it’s why most people give up by the end of January. They work so hard to get all four burners cooking on high heat that they end up with a burned out mess. Been there, done that. Haven’t we all?

This year, maybe we should take a different approach.

Get the pots on the stove and set them to simmer, not boil.

Burner #1 – Pick an exercise routine/program that you can do sustainably without injury.

Burner #2 – Add in some new healthy recipes and begin to eliminate unhealthy stuff. Don’t start with an all or nothing approach.

Burner #3 – Try turning off the TV an hour earlier. If you’re exercising and cutting back on sugar, chances are you feel it and need more rest.

Burner #4 – Find some simple changes. Pack your lunch instead of grabbing fast food. Fill up your water glass instead of grabbing a Coke out of habit. By the end of the year, you’ll have saved a ton of calories.

Over time, you can turn up the heat but for now, let’s simply get the pots on the stove.

Still too much? Pull out one pot and turn on one burner. Before you know it, you’ll be ready to add more.

How many burners are you cooking on this week?

  2. UGH! I seriously fired up 5 burners I think. So far so good, but this may be the key for me….too much! And I work nights so my sleep loses, more than usual. Then when I start to slip a little I just throw the whole stupod towel in. Sigh….as soon as my cleanse is done I am getting on board with the lifesize system, so that I can eat ANYTHING, just get my portions right. I am going to make that my ONE pot! Thanks babe, loving the dietbet and Erica House – shes awesome! :)

  3. Great analogy. And I needed it this morning. I’m sitting at my table dressed to hit the trail, but doing some serious procrastinating. (But see…it paid off because I had a chance to read your awesome post.) And now I am motivated. I am putting a pot on the damn stove. :) Heading out now.
    Thanks.
