The past few days, I’ve had a couple of aching teeth….back molars to be exact. This is new for me because I’m blessed with good teeth. Let me rephrase that, I have FABULOUS teeth. Dentists throughout my life have marveled at my lack of tartar building and naturally straight teeth. I’ve only had one cavity (senior year of high school) and vowed it would be my last. I’m a good brusher and flosser with the genes of good strong teeth in my favor. So, acute tooth pain is sort of a new experience.
After a few days of waiting for the pain to pass, I finally went to see my dentist yesterday. X-rays showed some fine cracks in two of my back molars. He says they are small but since they are causing me pain we “could” crown them. Thankfully, he wants me to try Sensodyne first. I asked him how on Earth this could have happened. He said, “Oh it looks like normal aging to me.” AGING!! What was he trying to say? I’m not 20 anymore??
He said, “Do you chew on ice? Ever chomped popcorn kernels? Use whitening toothpaste?” Umm…..yes.
Then he said, “Well, don’t do that anymore. Stick with the Sensodyne and if the pain is still bad in another week or so we can crown them but I hate to do that because the teeth overall look strong and the roots are good. It’s just normal aging.”
AGING…there’s that word again.
So, I picked up some Sensodyne at the drug store and it helped a little and should help more over time. That said, I want to keep my own teeth and Sensodyne isn’t going to heal the cracks. I already have one crown from a childhood accident and I don’t want any more. I want to heal my teeth if at all possible….is it possible?
I decided to Google. I searched for how to heal my teeth naturally. Studies dating back to the 1920′s from Dr. Edward Mellanby and Weston A. Price showed the benefits of Vitamin D, Fermented Cod Liver & Butter Oil, and grain free diets improving the health of teeth and in some cases re-mineralizing them. I read about oil pulling with coconut oil and rinsing with xylitol to rebuild my teeth.
I’m on it. All of it. Already on a grain free diet and thanks to internet shopping, the fermented Cod and extra vitamin D will be here on Friday. I need to pick up some xylitol at the store for rinsing and I’ve always got coconut oil in the house. So, for less than $80 I have a chance to heal myself and avoid a lot of painful and expensive dental work. Will I get the crowns if I need them? Sure. Will I try to improve my molar cracks in a paleo manner first? Absolutely. God gave us bodies that can heal in amazing ways. I’m going to give mine a chance!

Weston Price is one smart dude so you’ll probably heal up fast.
The more research I do into Paleo, the more I find out just how much of the modern day dental problems are linked to our lifestyles.
The main issue seems to be in our palates no longer forming to the correct shape.
There is an excellent dentist speaking on the subject at this years Ancestral health Symposium.
