Tonsillectomy – Day 1 and A Half

Good morning sports fans!

Ok, I don’t know why I called y’all sports fans because this isn’t a sporty blog most days but bear with me. I’m medicated and the Thunder is playing tonight! Well, at least I think they are playing tonight. Again, I’m medicated….but I’m pretty sure it is Tuesday.

It’s really early right now, about 2:20 in the morning. I slept all day yesterday so I’m a little backwards on the sleep for now. Anyway, it was time for pills and ice water.

I’m going to chronicle a little bit about what I’ve gone through so that other people doing searches for adult tonsillectomy can find information.

I had a procedure called an intracapsular tonsillectomy where my doctor left about 5% of my tonsils. It is the more modern approach and less risky. Still hurts but it should shorten the recovery time.

Yesterday I had my surgery about 9:00 a.m. and I was home by 11:30 or so. The surgery itself took about 40 minutes and I woke up around 10:15 a.m. It took me about 30 minutes to fully know who and where I was but after that I was in good shape. They gave me some Sprite (which normally I hate but was the best thing on the planet at that time). Had me dressed and put me in a wheelchair with an ice pack and more Sprite. I don’t remember most of the drive home but I am proud to say I didn’t throw up in my husband’s car.

The details of yesterday are hazy. I slept most of the time, ate some pudding, and drank about 100 oz of water. My doctor said to stick with soft foods but that I could pretty much eat whatever I wanted. I wanted refried beans but the small amount I tried, didn’t settle well.

The lingering effects of the anesthesia and the pills along with attempting to eat some thick tapioca last night created a perfect storm and at that point I did throw up twice. That’s not much fun after throat surgery in case you were wondering. Bled slightly but not much.

Having a good caretaker is very important. One minute you’ll think you are fine and the next minute you’ll realize that drinking water is hard work and need to pass out. Mr. Coffee is taking very good care of me and my mom is taking very good care of the kids. They came by twice yesterday to give me hugs which was more healing than the medications.

I’m supposed to feel ok today and tomorrow before the real pain starts. I’m supposed to keep resting. The pain medication has me pretty certain that resting is all I’ll do. I’m taking Lortab and Toradol. Helps the pain, upsets the stomach, and makes me write long winded blog posts apparently.

I probably won’t post much this week if the pain is worse but I wanted to do a quick update and tell everyone how much I appreciated the prayers and comments. Y’all are the best!

Ok, I need to go back to bed now.

Thunder UP!!!!

  1. You wanted refried beans? Sweet mother of all things holy…that’s surely not what I expected!

    =)

And oh how I wish you were blogging during that first 30 minutes of not knowing who you were or where you were!! And with pics!

So, so glad to hear it was fairly easy on you and you’re back at home. The Beard will be in full swing tonight with Durant and I’ll be right there with you watching! Well, actually here…but kinda there in spirit.

Again. Never thought I’d say it…but:

    THUNDER UP!!!

  4. Funny how we all crave different things … After my bariatric surgery, I was only supposed to have certain things but I just couldn’t keep them down no matter how hard I tried. Finally my surgeon said to just eat whatever I wanted so I would try new things. I lived on 1% milk for a very long time.

Thoughts and prayers are with you, girl :-)

  5. Ouch!

I remember all too well the after effects from having my wisdom teeth pulled. I told anyone that would listen that it was worse than labor!

    Get better soon!
